Cigales Wine

The Cigales denomination of origin has 3,000 hectares of land in the northern region of the Duero Depression, north of the city of Valladolid, and it spreads throughout this province and in the province of Palencia, on both banks of the Pisuerga River up to the Torozo Mounts.

The soil in Cigales is deep, not light, and it is made of sediments from the of Tertiary and Quaternary, with sand, limestone, on a base of loam and gravel. The climate is continental, but with Atlantic influence, with large temperature variation and irregular rainfalls.

The main crop in Cigales is the Tinta del Pais grape, which is very similar to Tempranillo or Tinto Fino, occupying more than half of the vineyards. The second strain is Garnacha Tinta. Both of them provide wines with irregular ripening, and variations in intensity of the color of the skins from one year to another.
